US may hit Arab resistance movements a UAE daily warns

(WAM) The US may launch a war on some Arab and Palestinian resistance movements on the grounds that they were terrorist organisations, a UAE daily warned today. The US and Britain have frozen assets of a number of Arab and Palestinian organisations including the Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS), Islamic Jihad, Aqsa Brigad, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and Hezbollah. The daily 'Akhbar Al Arab' commented that statements by US official Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Satterfield on Friday that the 13-month old Palestinian Intifada had turned into ' an ongoing process of calculated terror and escalation' revealed the features of the forthcoming period during which the US may strike political organisations and groups in over 60 countries. The paper noted that Arab countries had, from the very beginning, condemned terrorism and co-operated with the US by passing critical intelligence information, although they had reservations on the definition of the phenomenon.

'Arab countries must work hard to block any attempt to accuse Arab resistance movements of terrorism and to demand that brutal aggression by Zionist occupation forces and the Sharon government on the Palestinian civilians be considered as state terrorism,' the paper said. 'Failure of the US to win the war on Afghanistan has prompted the Bush Administration to widen the spectrum of war under the pressure of US public opinion which is demanding an impossible success,' the paper added. Fearing to fall in the Afghanistan morass, the paper went on to say that the US administration had decided to escape forward by creating new enemies to achieve easy victory on them. The paper called on Arab countries to formulate a common position in order to pile pressure on Washington, stating that it would be impossible for them to go on the anti-terror global coalition if it added Arab resistance groups on the terror list.
