Members of a visiting media delegation from the United States have expressed profound happiness and appreciation of what they have seen regarding UAE'S startling achievements in all areas. The 13-member delegation, which arrived in the country at the invitation of the National Media Commission and in coordination with the UAE Embassy in Washington, said such a great achievement must undoubtedly have behind it a wise leadership and a hard working people.

In a statement to WAM, some of the delegation members said, following a series of press conferences they had with a number of senior UAE officials, the meetings had given them the opportunity to have insight about the history of the UAE's development and progress in various sectors, including, education, industry, economy, trade, building and construction, as well as in the tourism sector.

The delegation consists of representatives of media houses, including newspapers, magazines, TV channels and radio stations from various American states.

Members of the delegation, most of them members of the Newspaper Association of America (NAA), were received by Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, who gave them a detailed briefing about the development of education in the UAE. He attributed the great success in this regard to the wise leadership of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who, he said, makes the development of national human resources as a major priority.

Sheikh Nahyan also cited the US$10 billion Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, set up by His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to promote human development and improve the knowledge infrastructure in the Arab world, which, he said, would certainly give a major boost to the efforts being made to build a strong base for scientific dialogue and dialogue among civilisations, just as it would help break barriers in-between peoples of the world.

Other UAE senior officials that gave audience to the delegation include Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Hussein Al Sha'ali, who briefed the media persons on a wide range of local issues related to the UAE's achievements, bilateral ties between the UAE and the US and the situation in Iraq and Palestine. The Minister call for the need for the international community to step up efforts to end to the sufferings of the Palestinian and Iraqi peoples.

On relations between the UAE and Iran and the UAE's view on Iran's nuclear programme, Al Sha'ali pointed out that the UAE is a peaceful and peace loving country that wishes to settle the issue of its three islands being occupied by Iran by peaceful means. He said the region had had enough of wars and natural disaster over the past decades. It is therefore necessary to avert any new conflict, adding that the UAE is working hard to consolidate security and peace for all the peoples in the region and the world at large.

He commended in this regard the unified stance of member states of the Gulf cooperation Council (GCC). "We don't want the region to suffer the threat of nuclear weapons, therefore, there must be criteria to ensure the security and safety of all the peoples in the region as they share common interest," he said.

On UAE-US relations, Al Sha'ali said the two countries are bound by strategic relations that cover many areas, including economy, culture, education, trade and cooperation in all areas, including the combating of terror.

Minister of State for Federal National Council (Parliamentary) Affairs, Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash, also received the delegation and briefed them about the UAE's parliamentary and electoral experience. He said the last election saw half of the FNC members having being elected while the other half were appointed as part of the new programme introduced by the UAE President to boost the country's parliamentary work and encourage grassroots participation in the UAE's decision making process, adding that the programme reflects the strong national desire for political reform in stages, taking into serious consideration the local environment and the national experience, in addition to other factors like social values and tradition that seek to maintain the strong social fabric of the UAE society.

He cited women's representation in the FNC through the election process and by appointment, adding that women actively participate in parliament, its various committees and sub-committees, as well as in various social and economic areas. The delegation also met with FNC Speaker, Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al Ghurair and other UAE officials. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
