US Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson has paid rich tributes to H.H. President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the UAE government for their support of programmes of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the effective contribution to the campaign for the eradication of polio. At a joint press conference held here today by donor countries, namely US, Japan and the UAE, Thompson gave special reference to the role played by the UAE in various spheres, particularly in the humanitarian domain, in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq.

He further praised the UAE for the "noble" principles it espouse that are aimed at alleviating the suffering of peoples in a bid to eradicate chronic diseases such as Aids, hepatitis and polio. The American official cited recent aid by the UAE and other donor countries in support of the final phase of the anti-polio campaign in Pakistan. UAE's ambassador to Islamabad Ali M. Al Shamsi said his government appreciates efforts exerted by Pakistan and WHO to get rid of polio. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
