US sells off Arab causes: UAE daily

(WAM) A UAE leading newspaper today accused the United States of selling off the Arabs, saying that Washington had not shown so far any move to materialise US President George W. Bush's support for the creation of a Palestinian state and to prove its seriousness to convince Israel to accept the idea. 'Many Arab and Palestinian officials have, from the very beginning cast doubts over Bush's statement made after the September 11 attacks on the US. They say the statement lacked sincerity because it has come without any action plan,' the Sharjah-based daily 'Al Khaleej' commented today. However, the paper noted that a number of Arab and European politicians were betting on a change in the US policy towards the Palestinian cause on the conviction that the best and effective way to fight terrorism is to reach a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement to the Palestinian cause.

The paper said that Arab League Secretary General Amr Mousa had struck the heart of the truth when he said yesterday in Damascus that the Arab region was subjecting to 'political blackmailing' in reference to US efforts toward the peaceful settlement. 'It is quite clear now that the US is selling off the Arabs. Since Bush made his statement Washington has not taken any stance or sent any signal about its resolve to persuade Israel to accept its idea. In fact, Washington's behaviour has raised many questions and doubts because the floating of the idea has been motivated by tactics and propaganda associated with the critical current political situation starting with the attacks on New York and Washington up to the destructive war on Afghanistan,' the paper wrote.

Israeli officials have issued statements not only refusing completely the idea of a Palestinian state but also opposing the existence of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and the Palestinian people. The paper said that Israeli 'moderate' (Foreign Minister Shimon) Peres had likened the fulfilment of Palestinian rights as a suicide to Israel, while the Zionist criminal (Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon said the Oslo accords were a grave mistake committed by Israel and that he would deal with a local Palestinian leaders rather than the PNA. 'Although these statements were issued following weeks of mass killing and bombardment and incursions of Palestinian towns by US made weapons, the US reacted by describing the Intifada as a calculated terrorist operation. 'The naked truth is that another savage war has been waged against the Palestinian people alongside the US war on Afghanistan. Unfortunately, the US has not acted to halt it and protect the innocent civilians. On the contrary its officials have provided the political cover. Even the moderate Secretary of State Colin Powell said his friend Sharon was engaging in a bitter war against terrorism,' the paper concluded. (WAM)
