US should provide more evidence: UAE daily

(WAM) The American government last week released an hour-long video of Osama bin Laden talking about the attack on the World Trade Centre and how he hoped for the destruction which resulted. It is a chilling performance, in which two men calmly discuss one of the world's most horrific attacks, treating it as a successful project. It is a shocking insight into bin Laden's thinking said the daily 'Gulf News' in an editorial today. 'However, this video should not be the sum total of the U.S. Administration's evidence. The US should be able to show the world more than this tape which was found after the invasion of Afghanistan. The video is not the detailed forensic facts which the Administration should be able to produce. In the days after the attack on the World Trade Centre, the Americans said several times that they would produce evidence to back their suspicions, but that they were unable to do so at that time for operational reasons,' the paper said.

'This stance was backed by many leaders of the nations joining the coalition against terror, and the decision not to publish the evidence was broadly accepted around the world. Since that acceptance was given, the Taliban government of Afghanistan has collapsed and Al Qaida has suffered major defeats, with more expected in the next few days. It is reasonable that if the U.S. has evidence, which would reveal the source of the information, or harm some of its agents, the Administration might want to blur some of the details. Nonetheless, the U.S. Administration should have more evidence than one video and it is important that the Americans release their evidence in as much detail as possible, and as soon as possible. It is part of maintaining the coalition against terror, and it is part of the Bush administration's keeping faith with the rest of the world. A war has been fought, and the world has to know that it was a just war.' (WAM)
