Unfair and Unwarranted

(By The Detroit News)

Disturbing reports are beginning to emerge from throughout Metro Detroit of threats and expressions of hate and resentment against local Arab-Americans. They must stop now. As Metro Detroiters, we are of many colors, races, religions and ethnic groups. But we are one family. In times of trouble, families come together. Let us come together today. We will not permit an outside enemy to set us against one another. If the terrorists who struck our shores Tuesday have driven us to forget what we value as Americans, then they will have truly delivered a lasting blow. As Americans, we value tolerance, and eschew bigotry and guilt by association. The suspects believed responsible for the assault apparently are members of Islamic extremist groups.

The overwhelming majority of Arab-Americans do not subscribe to that philosophy, nor do they condone those who do. They read the Koran the way it was written, as a document of peace and understanding. Blaming them for the actions of fanatics who have twisted their faith into something unrecognizeable is akin to blaming all Christians for the clinic bombings carried out by anti-abortion zealots. One result of Tuesday's attacks likely not anticipated by the terrorists is the unity and patriotism it has inspired in the American people, Arab-Americans included. We all grieve together as one people. We all stand together as one people. And we will all move together as one people to right this wrong. Let's not compound the horrors we've experienced together by using the attack as an excuse to wallow in prejudice.
