New York - The Vatican and the UAE yesterday established diplomatic relations, the Vatican said. The two sides signed a joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic ties at ambassadorial level with immediate effect.

The statement was signed by Abdul Aziz Nasser Al Shamsi, UAE's Permanent Representative at the UN, and Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Vatican's Permanent Observer at the UN. The UAE and the Vatican are "desirous of promoting bonds of mutual friendship and of strengthening international cooperation", the communiqué said.

The diplomatic relations will be represented by the UAE at ambassador level and the papal diplomatic mission from the Vatican side, in accordance with the Vienna Accord of April 18, 1961. The Vatican already has diplomatic relations with countries such as Kuwait, Algeria, Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran and Iraq. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
