Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, received yesterday Greg Barker, UK's Minister of State for Energy and Climate. Al Tayer welcomed his guest stressing the importance of mutual coordination between the council and all the authorities concerned with energy so as to obtain the best expertise and determine the eco-friendly initiatives intended to secure a clean environment.

Al Tayer pointed out that the directives of Dubai's Supreme Council of Energy with the participation of some investors from different sectors and in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have led to the initiative of Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (DCCE) to control carbon levels and provide technical and knowledge support to the companies looking forward to apply eco-friendly policies and measures. This will also help companies to estimate and reduce their emissions of CO2.

The two sides explored issues related to the future of renewable and alternative energy resources in order to meet the upcoming demands of sustainable development. This comes in line with the strategy of Dubai's Supreme Council of Energy which is focused on securing energy supplies, providing alternative sources of energy in the Emirate of Dubai as well forecasting and managing the increasing demand for energy.

Al Tayer explained the importance of adopting the best international initiatives and giving due care to climate changes especially Co2 capture and storage technologies, "Clean Development Mechanism" (CDM), concentrating on implementing the best eco-friendly technologies to enhance the productivity of both power stations and water desalination stations.

Within this context, he referred to the green buildings project in Dubai which embodies the initiatives and vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aiming to launch eco-friendly projects. This project will cut down the consumption of electricity in general especially that used for cooling, lighting, heating water, as well as conserving the consumption of water. All this will lead to reducing the emissions of harmful gases and improving the quality of internal environment and air in houses.

Furthermore, HAl Tayer emphasised the great importance of economic and commercial ties between the UAE and the UK.

On his part, the UK's Minister praised the environmental initiatives launched by Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, saying that his country is seeking to promote these initiatives and exploit the opportunities provided by Dubai in the field of investments in eco-friendly projects. In addition the UK's Minister stated that his visit falls within the context of close collaboration with Dubai Supreme Council of Energy.

At the end of this visit, the UK's Minister extended thanks to Al Tayer for the warm reception and the opportunity provided to exchange views on energy sector and environment conservation. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
