Vice President, Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ordered the demographic structure committee to speed setting up of a permanent national authority to follow up the demographic issues. The order followed a briefing on work progress of the demographic structure committee since its inception by a Cabinet decision in September last year. Sheikh Mohammed said that the demographic structure issue "tops priorities of his government and all should deal with it seriously".

Meeting Lieutenant General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Demographic Structure Committee, Sheikh Mohammed reiterated that "our future and national identity are fundamentally linked with this issue, therefore, we should unify efforts to work as one team to specify a vision and mechanism, which could lead to a clear demographic model for future of our coming generations".

He was briefed on the details and indicators of the demographic structure, the labour market-related strategies and national identity issues by Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan in presence of HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs, HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, HE Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of the Cabinet Affairs and HE Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, State Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Chairman of the committee.

Sheikh Mohammed was also briefed about views of the committee on the knowledge economy, per capita production increment of UAE national and individual income rate in the community, and how these issues are linked to the demographic issues, as well as controversial relation between them. The briefing also included location of the UAE regionally and internationally in regard to data and statistics, which reflect future demographic structure and future repercussions as well.

Based on full briefing, Sheikh Mohammed ordered setting up of a permanent national authority to follow up this vital demographic file, among others, implementation of 66 initiatives to improve the demographic structure issue in selected sectors, which will be submitted to the Cabinet by the committee to take appropriate action. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
