Hanoi - Vietnam President Nguyen Minh Triet received UAE Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the accompanying delegation at the presidential palace in Hanoi Friday evening.

Sheikh Abdullah conveyed to the Vietnamese President the greetings of President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his wishes for the progress and prosperity of the people of Vietnam. He asserted that the UAE is always looking to extend bridges of communication with Vietnam and with all the nations of the world, especially the East Asian countries.

He said: "We are following with great interest the development and prosperity witnessed by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and we have a sincere desire to develop relations between the two countries, especially in the area of increased trade and investment".

"The UAE has enormous interest in diversifying investments at the global level and we are happy to see the presence of UAE firms such as DP World investing in Vietnam. We believe that there are great opportunities, especially in the field of infrastructure and renewable energy", he added.

Sheikh Abdullah stressed the keenness of UAE government and the people to strengthen the bonds of cooperation and communication with Vietnam to achieve common interests.

He also asserted that his visit to Vietnam will open wider horizons of joint trade and investment, as well as to develop relations in various fields between the two countries.

He also pointed out that the UAE will chair from next year and for a period of one year, the Gulf Cooperation Council and will take care of greatly enhancing cooperation among the GCC countries and the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, ASEAN.

The Vietnamese President welcomed Sheikh Abdullah and the delegation accompanying him and wished the relations between the two countries will prosper.

Triet said Viet Nam needed to tighten co-operation with the UAE. The co-operation with the UAE would also act as a bridge to strengthening ties with Middle East and Arabian nations, he explained.

The two sides had great potential for expanding co-operation based on their fine political ties, Triet said.

"The UAE is strong economically and financially, thus, Viet Nam looks forward to receiving more UAE enterprises to invest in our traffic infrastructure and energy," Triet said.

"The UAE is one of the big investors in Viet Nam with total capital of on-going projects amounting to US$3 billion," he noted.

Triet thanked the UAE for its supportive voice for UNESCO's (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) recognition of the Thang Long Royal Citadel as a world heritage site.

He thanked the UAE for its stance in support of Vietnam and its people and alluded to the wise leadership of President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He also noted that UAE occupies a distinguished position in the global arena. Triet sent his greetings and best wishes to President Sheikh Khalifa. The Vietnamese President said that the UAE has been able to get out of the global financial crisis early on the strength of its economy and its financial institutions.

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Ahmad Ali Al-Mualla, UAE Ambassador to Vietnam and a number of senior officials at the Foreign Ministry. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
