Voluntary work vital in containing crisis: UAE

New York - UAE has urged the international community to lay comprehensive strategies and programmes to support voluntary works world-wide, particularly in developing countries. In a statement on social development delivered last night before the UN General Assembly, UAE's Permanent Representative to the UN Abdul Aziz bin Nasser Al Shamsi said voluntary work "is a vital and important factor in containing regrettable repercussions of disasters and human crisis and in addressing issues of poverty, human development and security.

"The UAE was among the first countries involved in drawing proper educational, media and social syllabuses aimed at developing voluntary sense among its citizens either through its competent national foundations or by encouraging effective external voluntary works, the UAE Red Crescent Society, RCS, being a good example, "Al Shamsi opined.

He added that the RCS had dispatched a sizeable number of national volunteer groups in urgent peace and relief campaigns to alleviate the sufferings of thousands of victims and the needy in Palestine, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sudan, Somalia and other regions affected by armed conflicts and natural disasters.

The UAE envoy said that based on its past experience in the field of voluntary work his country was so convinced that such activities had " contributed enormously to social, economic and environmental security.” He pointed out that despite pledges given by heads of state and governments, during international conferences in recent years, to promote social development in the world " billions of people, according to reports, are still living in extremely deteriorating economic and social conditions. "The UAE, while reiterating support of all the recommendations of recent international conferences on social development, stresses the need for concerted efforts through UN agencies to wipe out, once and for, causes of armed conflicts and war in accordance with the UN Charter and international legitimacy,” Al Shamsi confirmed.

He urged developed and donor countries to honour " fully and urgently " the commitments they made during past conferences the most recent of which was the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, last September. Al Shamsi also called for the smooth flow of financial aid into the developing countries " unconditionally and without interference in their internal affairs " prior to their merger into the global economy. He further exhorted developed and donor countries to adopt an effective, fair and lasting solution to the debt problem of the developing and poor countries, including the writing off of their external debts.

The envoy said that UAE had pursued development policies aiming essentially at the development of national human resources and standards of living of all its citizens. " Thanks to these endeavours, UAE has become one of fifty countries in the world to achieve highest human development levels as per UN criteria of human development for the year 2001,” he concluded.
