The World Health Organisation (WHO) has praised efforts being made by the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) to fight cholera break out in Somalia. A WHO statement by Mogadishu office recommended the RCS's efforts to control the disease at a time when the Eastern African horn country was passing through difficult times because of conflicts which forced many international organisations to freeze their operation. RCS Director General Abdullah Al Muheiri said the society had two clinics for cholera treatment in Mogadishu and Baidoa. ' In April, the Mogadishu clinic treated 506 cases of cholera against 163 cases by Baidoa's,' he said, adding that a WHO team had visited the two centres and appreciated the health services offered by them. Since its foundation in 1993, the RCS's office in Somalia has spent Dh 7 million in different humanitarian projects. He said that another RCS's health centre in Mogadishu cured 66,500 patients in 2000. On education, he said, the RCS is currently running four regular schools and an orphanage, offering education for 3,747 male and female students. ' The RCS has established 14 centres for Quran memorisation accepting 840 students. It has also built 83 mosques, drilled 57 wells in addition to other projects,' he added.
