WSIS 2012 recognizes UAE's outstanding achievements in getting the world connected

Geneva - The UAE was presented yesterday with the Excellence Award in recognition of implementation of projects and initiatives which further the goals of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in improving connectivity to information and communication technologies (ICTs).

Ambassador Obaid Salem Al Za'abi, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations in Geneva, received the prize from Secretary-General of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Dr Hamadoun Tour? at the concluding ceremony of the UN World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS 2012) held from 14th to 18th May in Geneva, Switzerland

More than 170 projects from 50 countries were nominated. Submissions, which were subject to a stringent multi-phase evaluation, came from governments, international organizations, civil society, the private sector and individuals, reflecting the multi-stakeholder nature of the WSIS process.

The WSIS Project Prizes are an initiative that was created in response to requests from participants at last year's WSIS Forum for a mechanism to evaluate and reward individuals, governments, civil society, local, regional and international agencies, research institutions and private sector companies for the success of their efforts in implementing development-oriented strategies that leverage the power of ICTs.

In his opening speech, the ITU chief expressed his gratitude to the UAE as the Government Strategic Partner for the 2012 WSIS Forum. The objectives of the WSIS Project Prizes 2012 are to: encourage stakeholders to share their success stories on the implementation of WSIS outcomes.

- recognize projects which demonstrate efficiency and impact that can be easily replicated.

promote the most innovative projects from all over the world.

- - empower and engage WSIS stakeholders to take active part in the evaluation of the implementation of WSIS outcomes.

- spread awareness about WSIS Action Lines and their implementation.



WSIS Project Prizes 2012 containing 18 categories were created in order to encourage all groups of stakeholders from all over the world to share their experiences on WSIS implementation and leverage its activities.

During the ICT summit, the UAE introduced its impressive achievements and progress in terms of e-government and issues related to WSIS goals.

The UAE was represented at WSIS 2012 by Sharjah Department of Information and eGovernment, Emirates eGovernment, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), Emirates Identity Authority and Ankabut, the UAE Advanced Network for Research and Education.

At the WSIS, the Sharjah eGovernment participated in the thematic workshop under the title "eTransformation '&' Integration; Key Perspectives in Growing Government Entities,".

Officials from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), Emirates Identity Authority, and Sharjah eGovernment, engaged in a country workshop titled: "UAE Success Stories, Commitment and Dedication". – Emirates News Agency, WAM
