A number of women leaders in the UAE today hailed the stance of their country towards the unfolding humanitarian tragedy in Lebanon. Speaking to WAM on the current Israeli onslaught against Lebanon and the ensuing humanitarian crisis, the women leaders said the UAE position was nothing new as the country had always been the first to extend a helping hand to those in distress anywhere around the globe.

"The UAE under the leadership of President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his brother, Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the emirates, has had a long-standing tradition of benevolence. It was therefore no wonder that we were the first to come to the aid of Lebanese brethren", said Sheikha Ohud bint Rashid Al Mualla, Chairman Women of Umm Al Qaiwain Girls Club.

She also commended the UAE philanthropists and charity organisations for showing great solidarity with the people of Lebanon. "Our country is united towards this great cause. This common position underscores the values of our as founded by the late founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan", she said.

Sheikha Ameena bint Humaid Al Tayer, Chairwoman o the Dubai Women Association said her organisation recently launched a charity campaign in cooperation with the association of wives of foreign diplomats in Dubai. The organisation was also coordinating with the UAE-Lebanese Friendship Society.

"The objectives of this campaign is to show solidarity to our beleaguered brothers in Lebanon. It is part of our obligation to support Arab and Islamic causes", said Al Tayer. The women leaders also condemned what they described as vicious Israeli onslaught against innocent civilians, particularly women and children.

"Why should such horrendous massacres of children and women be allowed to continue? Where is the international community", asked Raja Nomaan, Deputy President of Umm Al Mo'mineen Society in Ajman. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
