Wooden Powerboat race to start season

The final round of the UAE Wooden Powerboat Championship 2012-13 season kicked off at Jumeirah on yesterday following on from a history that dates back over 25 years.

One of the first recorded organised watersport races in Dubai was a wooden powerboat race from Umm Al Qaiwain to Dubai in 1987. It was run by the military and covered about 50km across a choppy sea along a very different coastline.

The 28ft boats however, have stayed the same. They are still wooden as fibre glass is not allowed and they are still piloted by one or two pilots and the shape of the hull has had little variation over the years. The engines conversely have evolved from 75hp to 90hp two stroke outboard engines powering the boats.

The wooden powerboat has an open cockpit and hull unlike the modern boats but follows a similar course structure and length of race, usually 8 laps totalling approximately 27.1 nautical miles. It is a popular sport with a fleet of up to twenty boats taking to the water.

Access to watch the racing is free and can be seen from the open beach at Jumeirah next to the Jumeirah Beach Park, the start will be at 10 am followed immediately by the prize distribution at DIMC. – Khaleej Times
