Work on QE2's home in Dubai starts in September

Nakheel will begin work on a luxury marina development project in September to house the world-famous cruise liner QE2, the company said in a statement yesterday. QE2, which was purchased last year by Nakheel's parent organisation Dubai World for $100 million, will travel to Dubai from Southampton, England in November and anchor at a palatial pier stretching 300 metres out of the turn side of Palm Jumeirah. Completion of the entire marina project is slated for 2011 while reclamation work for the pier will be done by the end of this year.

Nakheel said the ocean liner, which has circumnavigated the world 25 times, would be transformed into an ultra-luxury floating hotel with public promenades, retail outlets, cafes and restaurants as well as a heritage museum of maritime history.

Johann Schumacher, the director of Palm Jumeirah, said that QE2 would provide the third jewel on the crown of the world-class destination and complement the Atlantis, Cirque du Soleil and Trump International Hotel & Tower.
