Major General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief, will inaugurate the first World billiards championships at the Dubai Police Officers Club later tonight. The organisers of the three-tier competition have managed to attract some of the best cueists in the world for this championship, which is scheduled to conclude on April 25 in Fujairah. The third and final tier of the competition will see the best eight in the UAE and another eight in the Middle East region compete with the world's best 16 for a chunk of the total prize money of Dh1 million.

Tonight's inauguration will see more than 1,500 cueists from the UAE competing for the eight places on offer. The competition will go on until April 10. The second tier of the championship, to be held from April 14-18, will see cueists from 17 countries in the Middle East vie for the eight slots. Held alongside these three competitions will be the Asia billiards, snooker and pool Expo dealing with the business connected with the sport. (The Gulf News)
