Eager to strengthen its fraternal ties with Iraq, the United Arab Emirates has decided to cancel debts owed by Iraq, amounting to US$ 4 billion, including interests and arrears. "The decision by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to write off debts owed by Iraq shows the country's keenness to strengthen relations with our brothers in Iraq," Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said today. He added that the decision coincided with a number of initiatives taken by the UAE in support of Iraq, including appointment of a new ambassador to Baghdad. "This step is set to contribute in bolstering bonds between the two countries and expanding them to cover all fields of cooperation."– Emirates News Agency, WAM
