Zayed Foundation allocates Dh26 million for drought-hit African countries

The Zayed Foundation for Charitable and Humanitarian Works has allocated Dh 26 million for the relief campaign in the drought-hit countries in the Horn of Africa.



Acting upon instructions by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and follow up of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the Foundation will use these funds to drill water wells in a number of Eastern African countries of Djibouti, Tanzania and Ethiopia whose some regions were affected by drought due to short of rains.



Sheikh Ahmed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Under Secretary for the Ministry of Finance and Industry, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, has instructed the Foundation management to expedite the drilling of wells which has already commenced in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Instructions were also given to the Foundation to take prompt practical measures to implement similar water projects In Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti.



Acting Director General of the Foundation Salim bin Obeid Al Dhahiri disclosed that memoranda of understanding would be concluded with these countries on these projects. He added that a delegation would leave for Tanzania within the coming few days to purchase foodstuff from the local market to distribute them to urgently needed population.
