Zayed calls upon the US Administration to rein in Israel

President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan urged today the US to play a more active and fair role in advancing the Middle East peace process and to shoulder its international responsibility as a major peace sponsor for the sake of regional and international peace and security. '

The UAE is ready to exert all possible effort with its sister Arab countries to support the peace process in line with international legitimacy resolutions,' Sheikh Zayed said during talks with US Mideast envoy William Burns, who arrived in Abu Dhabi as part of a regional tour.

Talks also reviewed the latest developments in the Arab occupied territories and Arab and international efforts being made to halt Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people. US moves to resume peace negotiations were also touched. Sheikh Zayed also condemned Israel's continued aggression on the defenceless Palestinian people "At a time Israel unleashes its lethal weapons against the Palestinian people who have nothing else but stones, we see the U.S. unable to rein in Israel," Sheikh Zayed said. Sheikh Zayed said that the U.S. administration was required to be exemplary in its leadership and patronage of peace and to be more reasonable and balanced in its positions.

He said " The U.S. should stop the terrorism, aggression and barbaric crimes committed by Israel and to intensify its efforts to restore peace and security." Sheikh Zayed added that it was also a political and moral obligation on the U.S to show hope to the Palestinians that the naked aggression against them would stop. "Hopes are attached on the U.S. administration to confront the aggressor and to support the victim and to make it clear that there is no military solution to any problem and that fire, war and violence never bring any solution," Sheikh Zayed said.

Sheikh Zayed wondered how could the Palestinians and Israelis live together in future when Palestinians experienced daily killings, destruction and blockade and confronted planes and bullets with only stones to defend their land and property against aggression. "History is replete with examples of great powers and colonial empires that had committed aggression and then disappeared. This is a proof that the power of balance is never permanent and man should draw lessons from history. Greed for others rights never yields any profit," Sheikh Zayed said.

For his part, Burns said that he had great appreciation for Sheikh Zayed's wisdom and that he had benefited from his advice and views. He added that he would convey the President's view to the U.S. administration, noting that the U.S. administration had now a clear picture of the Middle East situation on all sides and that it would work hard to bolster peace and stability in the region. Present at the meeting were a number of Sheikhs, Ministers and senior officials. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
