President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan yesterday ordered the delivery of the second phase of humanitarian assistance to the Afghanistan. The assistance is part of the sustained UAE efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Afghan people who are yearning for prosperity after years of a devastating war. The delivery of assistance during this holy month is also in line with the Islamic values of fraternity and attending to the needs of brethren who are in distress.

The assistance consists of multi-purpose civil equipment in addition to communication equipment needed most by people living under very difficult conditions. In line with the presidential orders, Lt. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, directed the speedy delivery of the assistance to the concerned authorities in Afghanistan so that the humanitarian objectives of the assistance are met.

Meanwhile, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has received a gift from President Sheikh Zayed. The gift was delivered to the Afghan leader at the Presidential Mansion in Kabul by Ali Mohammed Al Shamsi, UAE Ambassador to Pakistan and non-resident Ambassador to Afghanistan, and Brigadier Obaid Saif Al Kabi, Military Attaché to Pakistan. In a statement after meeting the UAE envoy, President Karzai hailed the UAE humanitarian assistance, saying that President Sheikh Zayed was among the first leaders to offer generous assistance to the Afghan people, a gesture which has left an enduring effect on the people of Afghanistan.

This stance will undoubtedly strengthen the bilateral ties between the two countries, noted President Karzai. For his part, Afghan Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Yahya Marouf commended the continuous UAE support to Afghanistan financially and politically. He added that the delivery of assistance at this point in time is a gesture of solidarity, for which the people of Afghanistan will ever remain grateful to Sheikh Zayed and the people of the UAE, particularly that the UAE assistance is the first Arab assistance to be received by the Afghans.

The second phase of the UAE assistance to Afghanistan is an extra UAE efforts aimed at providing needs of the Afghan civil society in terms of communication equipment. The assistance comes as an extended effort being done alongside the main reconstruction efforts to which the UAE pledged US$ 35 million during the Tokyo conference on the reconstruction of Afghanistan, said ambassador Al Shamsi.
