President H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan has ordered the reconstruction of the housing units destroyed by the Israeli military invasion in the Jenin refugee camp. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Society, RCS, said the President's instructions included the building of 800 housing units with all amenities. Sheikh Hamdan made the statement during a meeting with Peter Hansen, Commissioner General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, UNRWA, who is on a visit to the UAE.

He affirmed the President's keen desire to extend all kinds of support for the Palestinian people in order to alleviate their suffering as a result of the Israeli aggression. Sheikh Hamdan said that the Israeli occupation army had committed indiscriminate and barbaric crimes against the Palestinian people by destroying houses, killing children and the elderly in the West Bank and Gaza strip, particularly in Jenin and Nablus refugee camps.

He added that the RCS had succeeded to deliver foodstuff and medicine to Jenin refugee camp and other besieged Palestinian areas as part of its humanitarian mission aimed at alleviating the plight of the Palestinian people. He expressed the need for all Arab, Islamic and international humanitarian organisations to extend assistance to the Palestinian people.

For his side, Hanson praised the UAE for its continued support for the Palestinian people, which he said was going through a difficult time and needed urgent help for the reconstruction of houses and infrastructure destroyed by the Israeli army. He briefed Sheikh Hamdan on the serious economic and social difficulties in which the Palestinian people was living since the onslaught of the Israeli army on the Palestinian territories. Present at the meeting was Khalifa Nasir Al Suweidi, RCS Chairman, and Nadir Hadj Hammou, Resident Coordinator of UN Operational Activities for Development and Resident Representative of UNDP in the country.

Meanwhile, a plane carrying 40 tons of foodstuff and medications left today for the Egyptian Al Arish airport as part of the UAE's air bridge for the assistance of the Palestinian people. The relief supplies will be transported through the Rafah Pass and will be distributed to hospitals, clinics and other health centres in the Palestinian territories. The RCS earlier sent two planeloads of supplies for the Palestinian towns in the Gaza Strip. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
