Zayed urges US to intensify efforts for creation of a viable Palestinian state

President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, last Thursday urged the US and other prominent states in the Security Council to redouble their efforts to hasten the creation of an independent Palestinian state and to provide it with necessary protection against Israeli aggression and hegemony. In a letter he sent to the head of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people, Sheikh Zayed welcomed the US Administration's recently declared position in support of the establishment of a Palestinian state in order to bolster peace in the Middle East. Sheikh Zayed said that the commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people was an expression of support for the just and legitimate struggle of the Palestinian people to end Israeli occupation of their territories and holy places.

Sheikh Zayed condemned strongly Israel's policy of expropriation of lands, expansion of settlements and the state terrorism practised by the Israeli administration against unarmed Palestinians inside Palestinian areas. He said that Israel was responsible for the grave consequences that could result from its serious violations, calling these violations as legally null and void as well as a legal and political transgression against International law and the fourth Geneva Convention of 1949.

Following is the text of Sheikh Zayed's letter: " Your Excellency Papa Louis Fall, In the name of the government and people of the United Arab Emirates, it is my pleasure to extend my most sincere gratitude and appreciation to your excellency and other respected members of the committee for the great efforts you have exerted in the commemoration of the International Solidarity Day with the Palestinian people. We celebrate this day every year as an expression of the International Community's continued support and its firm and principled position on the just and legitimate Palestinian struggle aimed at ending Israeli occupation and regaining their territories and holy places and exercising their non-alienable national rights similar to other nations of the world.”

"I cannot also forget on this occasion to express our appreciation for the honest efforts exerted by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and his special envoy to the Middle East in order to ensure the implementation of relevant resolutions on International legitimacy. The keen desire of the UAE to participate effectively every year in this world commemoration of this day adopted by the UN as a day of solidarity with the Palestinian people, embodies our full support and backing for the just and honourable Palestinian struggle in which our brotherly people have sacrificed the lives of their sons in rejection of humiliation and occupation and to realise their freedom and independence similar to other nations of the world.

"In spite of the General Assembly's resolution 181 which partitioned Palestine into two states, one Arab and one Jewish, Israel which was created in 1948 has at the time deprived the Palestinian people to create their own independent state after it seized one-third of their territories and converted the majority of the Palestinian people into refugees in camps in the Diaspora and exile. It then continued in 1967 to expand its area of occupation to include the rest of the Palestinian territories. While we are greatly concerned about Israel's continued rejection to comply with all its obligations dictated by relevant UN resolutions which demand it to withdraw from all Arab and Palestinian territories under its occupation including the holy city of Jerusalem and the Syrian Golan Heights, we also regret to see that peace efforts in the Middle East have reached a deadlock due to the policy of retrogression and illusiveness pursued by successive Israeli governments towards the agreements they have signed within the framework of the Peace negotiations.

In addition to the adoption by these governments and particularly the current government of Ariel Sharon of state terrorism campaigns against the Palestinian people. This campaign includes all kinds of aggression, bombardment, killings, arbitrary detention, deliberate destruction of buildings as well as private and public institutions, destroying farms and cutting of millions of fruit bearing trees, expropriation of lands and water and energy sources, expansion of settlements, reoccupation of areas and violation of the sanctity of holy places, particularly the holy city of Jerusalem. In addition to blockades and closure of Palestinian towns and villages and prohibiting of the movement of people, cargo and humanitarian supplies.”

"The UAE reiterates its condemnation in the strongest of words, all such serious Israeli violations, particularly those related to the expropriation of lands and natural resources and colonial settlements. The UAE considers these practices as legally null and void and that they constitute a naked material, legal and political transgression of the international law, the international human law and Geneva Convention (IV) of 1949 as well as international legitimacy, particularly resolutions 242 and 338 and the principle of land for peace.”

"We also affirm the continuation of our firm and principled position in support of the Palestinian Intifada and the balanced resolutions of the Palestinian Authority in rejection of such aggressive Israeli policy. We hold the Israeli government responsible for the grave consequences as a result of its colonial plans which are contrary in form and content to the regional countries' peace approaches which aim at achieving peace and security in the region and the world. While we welcome the recent position of the United States in which it (US) promised to work for the establishment of a Palestinian state and for the bolstering of peace in the region, we encourage the US, as the prime sponsor of Middle East peace process, alongside the Russian Federation, the European Union and other effective members and non-members of the Security Council, to speed up their work to provide necessary protection to the Palestinian people and to their political, economic and social interests from the aggression and hegemony of the Israeli army.”

"We also urge them to demand the Israeli government for the immediate cessation of all its illegal occupation arrangements of Palestinian territories, including the holy city of Jerusalem, as well as to implement all its other obligations foremost of which are the dismantling of the settlements, the release of Palestinian and Arab prisoners and to allow the return of refugees to their homes.”

"In conclusion, we look forward to hear soon the declaration of the independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital as a basic condition for achieving a just, permanent and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. We also express our hope that the international community would redouble its efforts towards the realisation of the just and legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people. We also call upon the international donor community to increase its financial, economic and technical assistance to the Palestinian people in order to enable them to reconstruct their towns, villages and national economic, social and human resources institutions that have been regrettably destroyed by the Israeli war machine." Zayed donates to Al Aqsa Mosque

The daily ration of Iftar (breakfast) for Muslims at the Al Aqsa Mosque throughout the month of Ramadan is to be increased to 5,000 meals from 3,000 meals, the order was given by President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to the UAE Red Crescent Society, RCS. The gesture is in line with Sheikh Zayed's numerous initiatives to help the Palestinian people in their present situation. It is also in line with Sheikh Zayed's efforts to protect Islamic holy sites, including the Al Aqsa Mosque, which is now the target of conspiracy to rob it of its Arab and Islamic identity. In a statement, Khalifa Nasir Al Suwaidi,

RCS Board Chairman, thanked Sheikh Zayed for the new gesture, which, he said, was aimed at alleviating the sufferings of the Palestinian people, adding that the gesture also reflects Sheikh Zayed's great care for Palestinians and for Islamic holy sites. He said that the RCS was undertaking a number of projects in Jerusalem at a total cost of about USUS$6million, adding that those projects include maintenance work on the Al Aqsa Mosque, equipping the Al Aqsa Clinic and other charity works in Jerusalem. Worshippers at the Al Aqsa Mosque have expressed their gratitude to the UAE and its leadership, headed by Sheikh Zayed for the continuous support for the Palestinian people and their just cause.
