The President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan urged Washington to endeavour seriously to establish peace in the Middle East, during a phone conversation with US Vice President Dick Cheney, Emirates News Agency, WAM, reported yesterday. During the conversation, Sheikh Zayed and Cheney discussed "latest developments” (in Afghanistan) and efforts by international community to combat terrorism, the agency said. The UAE president ‘stressed the need (for United States) for striving seriously for the establishment of peace in the Middle East,” it said. The UAE strongly condemned the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington, but Sheikh Zayed also warned shortly afterwards that failure to find a just and lasting solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict would defeat efforts to combat terrorism.
