President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan gave yesterday a warm welcome to the participants of the Under 20 World Youth Championship being hosted by the UAE. 'We welcome you in the land of great dreams ..... the land of peace .... the land of fraternity, dedication and giving ... the land of the UAE, the President said in a recorded welcoming address at the opening of the championship. Sheikh Zayed hoped the big sport gathering would end up happily and pleasantly.

'Today's championship is a new addition to world sports history and a fresh achievment to the UAE for hosting all kinds of global events ... it is a real achievement in terms of sport, administrative, organisational and artistic levels,' he added. 'From the UAE the tree of dream spreads its shadows into the future which will be promising by your effort, creativity and sacrifice,' he said. Meanwhile, FIFA President Joseph Blatter said the UAE would offer the best facilities to ensure success of the championship. He hailed the great efforts made by the organising committee under the chairmanship of Sheikh Saeed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He noted the end of 2003 had seen dramatic changes not only at the FIFA but at the whole world.

The championship was scheduled for March but was postponed for external reasons. Sheikh Saeed said the UAE, under the leadership of Sheikh Zayed, was keen to make the tournamnet go down the history as unforgettable sport event. 'We hope the world event would achieve the aspired goals for humanitarian contact between nations and spread peace and love among them,' he said. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
