Zayed's legacy of compassion for his people: UAE daily

History remembers only those who leave an imprint on their surroundings through their good deeds.

"Those who have upheld people's interest will be cherished the most by history", opined Dubai-based English Language local daily in its editorial on Friday.

It added that only few leaders succeed in being able to build a bridge of strength and closeness with their subjects and the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan belongs to this small group of people.

"Sheikh Zayed's death is remembered once again this year not just because he was the first president of the UAE or because of the length of his service as ruler. Neither is this year commemorated because he was known across continents and countries. Rather, Sheikh Zayed is remembered because he was exceptional as a leader, as a builder, as a ruler, and above all, a man who stood with his people. And it is for being exceptional that history will always remember him", the paper said.

It indicated that when Sheikh Zayed thought of laying the foundations of a future country called the UAE, alongside the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, he was fully aware that the challenges were greater than what anyone could have anticipated. Announcing a day for independence is a much simpler task than building a nation. And to achieve that, Sheikh Zayed knew that it is the people who would be the building blocks.

The paper underlined that relentlessly, diligently, consistently, and passionately, over many decades, Sheikh Zayed made it his mission to create a country that allowed its people a better environment, a promising future, and a respected stance and presence amongst nations. If Sheikh Zayed leaves any legacy behind, it is of his compassion for his people and concern for the welfare of so many others. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
