Warsaw - H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, met here with Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Waldemar Pawlak for discussions on ways of enhancing relations between the two friendly countries in economy, trade and investment.

Latest developments in the region and other regional and international issues of mutual concern were also touched during the meeting.

The visiting UAE foreign minister also had talks with his Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski over UAE-Poland political and economic relations and current international events.

In a joint press conference with his Polish counterpart during his one-day visit to Warsaw yesterday, Sheikh Abdullah said he was pleased to have Poland within the international contact group on Libya. 'We hope the upcoming meeting of the group in the UAE would boost our efforts in Libya and the UAE-Poland bonds would contribute to achieving welfare to the Libyan people," Sheikh Abdullah said.

He thanked the Polish government for the warm welcome and generous hospitality, inviting Polish ministers to visit the UAE to explain the privatisation programme and attract UAE and Gulf investment.

For his part, the Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski expressed satisfaction at the level of bilateral political and economic relations and invited Gulf businessmen to investment in Poland.

On Libya, the Polish foreign minister highly appreciated the UAE's active participation in the current events in Libya, adding that Poland and UAE were monitoring the situation there. 'We will assist the National Transitional Council (NTC) in Libya to prepare for democratic transition there,' he said, adding that the UAE would host the next meeting of the international contact group on Libya in June.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement on the visit of Sheikh Abdullah in which it said the trip, the first for a top UAE official since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1989, would contribute to advancing political dialogue and leveraging the channels of direct contacts. The visit recognises Warsaw's contribution to issues in the Middle East and North Africa given its membership in the group.

Sheikh Abdullah's visit also aim to bolster cooperation between Poland and the GCC on one side and the EU on the other side as the UAE is current presiding the GCC while Poland will take the EU rotating presidency in the next half of the year. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
