Chinese prominent designer describes UAE Pavilion as architectural landmark

Shanghai - He Jingtang, dean of the architecture design institute under the South China University of Technology, has rated the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai as an 'architectural miracle' that will give the UAE unrivalled supremacy over pavilions of many countries.

He told China Daily in an exclusive interview that the UAE Pavilion is among the best in the world's largest expo.

According to him, the UAE Pavilion has made amazing blending of local culture with modern designs.

He said the design of the China Pavilion has fully satisfied the public expectations and could be viewed as a watershed of architecture in China.

Calling it one of his best works, He said Expo 2010 Shanghai's top attraction successfully combines traditional Chinese cultures and modern styles. "In the past, we were more inclined to imitating foreign (designs). The pavilion reflects the collective wisdom of Chinese architects. We have received positive feedback from the public," He added.

"Every element used in the China Pavilion has its Chinese origin," he said. "It's an abstract expression of China's 5,000 years of history and the culture of 56 ethnic groups." People can recognise the Chinese architecture at first glance, He said.

"What we architects do is learn from our counterparts on how to draw inspiration from the local culture and blend in our designs." In that respect, He said, the pavilions of Spain, Italy, Germany, France, UAE and UK are good examples.

Occupying an area of 6000 square metres in the heart of the Expo site, the spectacular UAE pavilion, known as 'The Dream Journey' is showcasing the prosperity, harmony, culture and innovativeness of the young nation to the world.

Expo 2010 is expected to attract 70 million visitors over a six-month period, from 1 May to 31 October 2010, the largest World Expo ever. Over 200 participants are participating in the fair, the widest in the history of World Expos.

Each Expo has a particular theme that must shape the country's participation. In the case of Expo 2010 it is ‘Better City Better Life'. The UAE's own narrative meshes particularly well with this theme.

Visitors to the UAE pavilion will be taken on an immersive dream journey where they will experience the rapid growth of the UAE's cities and meet the people who with creativity and vision are living their dreams at the heart of this inspiring story.

Targeted trade-related investment and business events will take place in the Business Centre at the pavilion and a programme of distinctive cultural events staged throughout the Expo by UAE performers will merge tradition with modernity. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
