Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said that Abu Dhabi's International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) is gaining prominence and wider acclaim among the world countries and companies producing weapons and defence equipments as the event provides them with a window, through which they look at the markets in the region.

The exhibition also represents a platform for the arms manufacturers to showcase their latest products and defence technologies in front of the governments in the region, who are in need of the defensive weapons, technologies and equipments to strengthen their armed forces to defend and protect their territories, independence and national wealth, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid added.

The following is the text of the message Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum gave on the occasion of IDEX 2011.

The IDEX 2011 in its tenth session will offer new electronic defence devices and sophisticated weapons, which may not have been showcased so far anywhere else in the world. This will allow the countries of the region, the Middle East and North Africa the opportunity to view these modern defence products and procure them through commercial transactions taking place in the exhibition every year.

We in the UAE do not look at IDEX or Dubai Airshow as two platforms for arms race in the region, as some claim, but see them purely in terms of trade, tourism and technology, because of the diversity in attendance and participation in these events, which have gained international fame and earned great confidence among the exhibitors and consumers. This makes the United Arab Emirates a meeting place for people of different races and a gateway between East and West, not to mention the experience and knowledge which the men of our armed forces and our police gain through mixing with the experts who arrive from all over the world.

The IDEX 2011, which will begin within a few days, is the twin event of the Dubai Airshow as they complete each other in the qualitative development and success, fame and reputation enjoyed by the two exhibitions on the international and regional levels.

The continuity of IDEX with this momentum, development and the volume of demand from countries, companies, factories and individuals demonstrate its success, strength and quality and positions itself as an event of economic and tourism importance as well as creates an opportunity for cross-cultural understanding. The visitors get a chance to see the cultural expressions of our country, its Arab and Islamic traditions and customs.

We are confident that this year's show will see a large turnout and the increase in the proportion of exhibitors and visitors because it brings with it all that is new in the world of defence industries and military equipment.

The success of the exhibition industry in our country with its various types including trade, tourism, health, culture, science and others can be attributed to many factors, the most important among them being the balanced policy of the leadership at the regional and international levels, as well as the openness on political, economic, cultural and humanitarian levels adopted by our nation since its founding in the era of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the following of this approach by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. May God protect him.

Among the other factors are the ideal geographic location of our beloved country, advances means of transportation, modern communication, all of which make the UAE the first destination for companies, businessmen and tourists, apart from the numerous facilities given by the government for investors, firms, businessmen, seekers of jobs, marketing opportunities, investment and a life in security and safety in a multicultural environment.

We in the UAE, both the people and the leaders, are proud of the reputable status of our country and its well established position on the regional and international levels. We are also proud of our young people as well as their competencies and expertise in various sectors that make them worthy of our confidence as leaders and are able to assume their responsibilities in business leadership and the tasks entrusted to them.

Exhibitions has become one of the most important industries, which are mastered and managed by the children of our country; and this is another major reason contributing to the consolidation of the confidence of others in our young people, our institutions, security and stability that attract capital, companies and individuals.

The preparations for the next session of the Dubai Air Show are in the full swing as the organisers, promoters, security agencies, media and logistics, are working together to make it an event that will perpetuate the reputation it has earned over the last 20 years. The event will take place within the next nine months on the here in the UAE, the land love, tolerance and peace. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
