Abu Dhabi plans to develop over 70,000 acres of farmland in Africa's largest country Sudan as the first step in a broader strategy to secure food supplies amid rising prices. UAE traders importing rice from Thailand Posted on 15/06/2008
Traders in the United Arab Emirates are securing more rice supplies from Thailand, causing its rice exports to soar by 135 per cent.
Thai Consul-General Pasan Theparak told Khaleej Times that from January to April this year, UAE imports had reached US$19.4 million or an increase of 135 per cent as compared to only US$8.3 million during the corresponding period last year.

As global food crisis continues unabated, a UAE study has called for diversification of the country's sources of food imports to control prices and avert possible food shortages.

Food inflation in UAE falls as measures take effect Posted on 19/05/2008
Food inflation in the UAE sharply receded in April after more than a year of steady increase, indicating a series of government measures to control prices have started to produce results. After surging by between one and six per cent in February over the previous month, the general food index grew by between zero and three per cent in April over March, the Ministry of Economy said in its latest monthly update.

New food law in capital from May 1 Posted on 06/04/2008
The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, yesterday announced a new law to ensure the safety of food items. The law will come into force in Abu Dhabi from May 1. Sheikh Khalifa was speaking at a conference in the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ADCCI).
