Abu Dhabi has been named among the top 100 busiest global meetings destinations in the International Congress and Convention Association's (ICCA) 2012 global city rankings for the first time, jumping from 234th place with eight meetings in 2011, to hosting 22 association meetings last year.
The UAE capital is now ranked alongside other major meetings cities including: Atlanta, Georgia; Brasilia and Perth, Australia; and higher than established global hubs such as Las Vegas in the US and Cologne in Germany
The rankings are an annual league evaluated and published by ICCA, which represents the main specialists in organising, transporting and accommodating international meetings and events, with over 950 members in 88 countries.
Abu Dhabi is one of only two Arabian Gulf cities to make it to the Top 100 rankings - the other is Dubai which made it to 60th place with 38 meetings
"This is a welcome endorsement of Abu Dhabi's credentials as a recognised destination for the meeting, incentive, conferences and exhibitions industry," said Jasem Al Darmaki, Deputy Director General, Abu Dhabi Tourism '&' Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi)
In 2012 the total number of events hosted at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) alone grew to 360 from 232 the previous year, a 55% increase. In addition, 17 conferences were held that attracted almost 25,000 participants and 111 special events and meetings
Two years ago Abu Dhabi initiated a One Destination collaborative stakeholder approach to winning major meetings business - an approach ADNEC says is paying off
Abu Dhabi is making major strides on the international business events scene. Earlier this year TCA Abu Dhabi launched the Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau to drive forward the emirate's business events ambitions. The bureau is a dedicated, one-stop entity which supports the growth of exhibitions, conferences, meetings and incentives within the emirate by forging closer links with the industry and providing a full range of support.
Two months later the Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau overhauled its Advantage Abu Dhabi initiative aimed at the corporate meetings and incentive travel segments with the introduction of 13 structured offerings designed to enhance the emirate's appeal amongst sector-specific bookers.
Other major events coming to Abu Dhabi include: 2013 FTI Touristik - the market-leading tour operator for Germany, Austria and Switzerland - is to bring 150 of its top selling German travel agents to Abu Dhabi this December for a sales appreciation incentive and educational workshop programme, its first outside Europe.
The workshop will celebrate FTI Touristik's 30th anniversary and comes as the company looks to grow package sales to Abu Dhabi by 60% this year. The three-day workshop incentive emerges from the TCA Abu Dhabi and Etihad Airways joint 'Access Abu Dhabi' marketing programme.

The second Dubai Global Energy Forum (DGEF 2013) will be held next month under the theme ‘Clean Energy for Sustainable Development.'
This year's event will be bigger than last year in terms of participants that will take place from April 15-17, 2013 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Leading experts, government officials and key industry players from the global energy industry will discuss environment, energy and sustainability issues at the forum.
The announcement was made by the Supreme Council at a Press conference attended by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman of the Supreme Council, general managers and leading officials from the Supreme Council.
Last year Dubai became the first city to host the World Energy Forum (WEF) outside the United Nations headquarters in New York. Under the theme ‘A Forum for World Leaders', WEF 2012 discussed the need for the development of safe, sustainable energy for the entire world as a means of driving continued socio-economic growth.
DGEF 2013 will attract an even greater number of experts, government officials and key industry players, and promises to be a major platform for debate in the global clean energy sector. The forum will facilitate discussion of key energy, environment and sustainability issues, alongside how to encourage investment in green projects, ways to reduce energy and water consumption through influencing consumer behaviour, current energy policies, and an outlook for this important sector.
"With our firm belief that clean energy is the energy of the future, the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy focuses all efforts on strengthening the capabilities of renewable energy sources on both a local and global level,” Al Tayer told reporters in his address.
He continued: "In this regard, we have launched several renewable energy projects, such as the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.
This initiative is in line with the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, which seeks to diversify Dubai's energy mix and make use of renewable energy sources to contribute a targeted five per cent of total energy generation by 2030, with nuclear energy providing a further 12 per cent, clean coal 12 per cent and the rest generated using gas. The Supreme Council also focuses on energy demand management, targeting a 30 per cent reduction in demand by 2030, which would result in a massive decrease in carbon emissions, another key topic to be discussed at the forum.”
Dubai is placing considerable emphasis on facilitating the global development of clean energy in order to promote sustainable development, he said. The forum will also explore the latest solutions, technologies and investment opportunities for clean energy and sustainable development.
He said DGEF's objectives are aligned with the recommendations of the Rio+20 United Nations conference, held under the theme ‘The Future We Want,' which drew a roadmap for global sustainable development based on the principles of a Green Economy.
"The objectives of the forum align with our leadership's vision and support the national long term initiative of ‘Green Economy for Sustainable Development,' which aims to position the UAE as one of the pioneers in sustainability,” said Al Tayer.
"Clean energy is a key driver for sustainable development, and we must therefore examine the issue and discuss its many aspects in an effort to reach the best possible solutions in supplying clean energy from across the different sources available. We must also consider our environment, which must be placed at the forefront of our priorities through reducing our carbon emissions from fossil fuels,” Al Tayer said.
This year's Forum is made up of seven major tracks, which consists of plenary and parallel sessions of keynote speakers and panellists. Sessions topics include: investing in green projects, the potential of nuclear energy in the MENA region, how to unlock solar energy's potential, and influencing consumer behaviour in an effort to reduce energy and water consumption. – Khaleej Times

"Its available!” gushes Dr Rainer Behne, Chairman of BehneMar Yachting, as he talks to XPRESS about the super yacht M/Y Sapphire — Trinity 50 metres, which is on display at the Dubai International Boat Show 2013.
Priced at Dh100 million, he is sure that a buyer will soon snap it up as the market for super-yachts is currently on a high in the UAE.
A look inside this yacht — decked in opulent interiors — and it's hard not to think of it as your luxury dream home.
"The market for super-yachts today is huge. In 2000, we were exporting 70 per cent of our yachts to other countries. However, from 2006 onwards, the number massively dropped by 20 per cent as more and more wealthy businessmen wanted to own a yacht in the UAE,” Sultan Alshaali, CEO, Al Shaali Group, said, adding, GCC markets, especially Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, have shown considerable interests in super-yachts.
Al Shaali said yacht owners are also reaping returns on their investments as more and more of them are leasing their yachts.
Take the case of the AS Marine Porto Fino 85, a Dh10 million privately-owned yacht manufactured by Al Shaali. "For the last five years, she has hosted a party every weekend in the UAE. She is a busy yacht with leasing becoming a big activity among boat owners.”
Another trigger for increased demand in yachts has been the improved logistics and infrastructure in Dubai. "The marinas are growing tremendously with more and more berthing facilities, prompting more people to consider it as a lucrative investment,” said Alshaali.
Erwin Bamps, Chief Operating Officer, Gulf Craft, said: "Buyers today are far more intelligent. They know what they are buying and this has triggered some serious interest in the market. While the market for yachts in the price range between US$1 million and US$4 million dollars has slowed down, anything more or less is in huge demand.”
The Dubai International Boat Show is on till Saturday (March 9) between 3pm and 9.30pm at the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), Mina Seyahi.
Admissions are for Dh60 per person. For children under 12 years, the entrance is free. At the show, 430 boats and 19 super-yachts are on display. In addition, a Supercar Promenade will show-case limited edition of some models such as Bentley, Brabus, McLaren and Rolls Royce. – Gulf News

Abu Dhabi has launched a new force to drive its business events ambitions forward as it looks for the emirate to be ranked by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) as among the world's top 50 association meetings destinations in five years.
Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau - a new dedicated, one-stop entity within Abu Dhabi Tourism '&' Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) - will support the growth of exhibitions and conferences within the emirate by forging closer links with the industry and providing financial and non-financial support.
The bureau, which will have both expatriate and Emirati expertise, will provide a range of services to the industry including bid presentation support, delegate generation campaigns, local stakeholder co-ordination and knowledge, on-site destination advice, government support co-ordination and marketing assistance.
The launch of the new entity follows a detailed economic impact study commissioned by TCA Abu Dhabi which showed that 19% of international business events visitors coming to the emirate were international and not resident in the UAE. These visitors spent Dh10,000 (US$2,723) per event while domestic visitors spent Dh640 (US$174). In 2010 the total economic impact of business events on Abu Dhabi was Dh2.4bn (US$653m).
In addition, studies commissioned by TCA Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) suggest the economic impact from business events in Abu Dhabi is expected to increase by approximately 7% per annum on average up until 2020 based on historic performance.
The emergence of the new bureau follows a growing appetite for Abu Dhabi as a major convention destination over the past year and a huge surge in its major business events credentials following last year's successful staging, at ADNEC, of the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC) and a number of subsequent competitive congress wins.
The medical sector holds out significant opportunity for Abu Dhabi as it pursues major convention business. The emirate has already secured the 20th Asia Pacific Congress of Cardiology, which will be staged at ADNEC in 2015.
Hosted by Emirates Cardiac Society (ECS) and secured via a joint TCA Abu Dhabi-ADNEC bid supported by the ECS, the biennial scientific meeting represents the collegiate membership of 18 societies throughout the Asia Pacific region. It will bring an anticipated 3,000 medical specialists to the city, delivering direct, indirect and induced economic impact of US $16m (Dh60m).
The WOC case study has stood Abu Dhabi in good stead in building a portfolio of major events which now includes: this April's World Travel '&' Tourism Global Summit at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers with over 1,000 of the world's travel and tourism industry leaders expected and June's staging of The Institute of Travel '&' Tourism's annual conference - the blue ribbon event of the UK's travel and tourism industry at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. Around 450 of Britain's travel and tourism decision-makers are expected to attend.
Also on Abu Dhabi's expanding major business events calendar are: this November's International Conference on Neurology '&' Epidemiology, which is due to be attended by 600-800 of the most eminent medical practitioners in these specialised fields.
In March 2015, ADNEC will host the 16th World Congress on Tobacco or Health - a triennial gathering of international advocacy, public policy and health research experts working together to achieve the goals of the world's first public health treaty, the World Health Organisation's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC).
Another 2015 event scheduled for the emirate is the 70th Annual Conference of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums which will be held at the Al Ain Wildlife Park '&' Resort (AWPR) following an AWPR bid supported by TCA Abu Dhabi.
The authority is also working to upgrade its Abu Dhabi Advantage incentive programmes aimed at bringing international events to the emirate and winning regional corporate meetings for the destination. The upgraded versions are to be launched at the Gulf Incentive, Business Tourism '&' Meetings exhibition (GIBTM), which will run at ADNEC from March 25-27.
To strengthen Abu Dhabi's standing as a leading business events destination, Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau has partnered with several leading global communities and organisations including: The Energy Cities Alliance; the Future Convention Cities Initiative; the International Congress and Conventions Association; Meeting Professionals International; the Society of Incentive Travel Executives and UFI - the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry.– Emirates News Agency, WAM
