 Al Ain on the tentative list of World Heritage Sites

Al Ain is on the Tentative List of World Heritage Sites of UNESCO, announced Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH).
The move, which is a preliminary step for Al Ain to make it to the official list, capitalizes on the particular cultural wealth of the city and shows that it has been able to keep its originality, despite the boom of modern buildings that stormed the United Arab Emirates.

With its ancient tombs, archaeological ruins, date palm groves and wealth of cultural assets, Al Ain has set its sights on being included on the World Heritage list by 2010. The sixth edition of the Sharjah Heritage Days 2008 opens in Sharjah tomorrow with ‘Heritage is our Identity' as its theme.  UAE heritage goes online

The UAE's cultural heritage will be showcased in a new bilingual website to be set up by The Young Arab Leaders UAE Chapter and Zayed University. Zayed University students will generate content for the website, which will be set up in partnership with UK-based consultancy EUCLID.
In addition to this, a team of experts has been assigned to work on a proposal to create a digital platform illustrating the country's diverse cultural aspects.

 First pearl convention aims to revive traditional trade

The first International Pearl Convention will be held in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in November to revive the pearl industry in the UAE. The world's second largest pearl, the Arco Valley Pearl which is also the largest pearl currently for sale, will be on auction during the convention. Seminars, workshops and auctions will be held throughout the five-day convention, which will be held from November 18.

Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) resumes holding workshops to prepare a law project to protect, regulate and manage cultural heritage in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The law goes in line with the strategy of ADACH to preserve and regulate tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Emirate. It will also replace the local archaeological law number 8 of the year 1970.

 Watani camps make history come to life in a fun way for UAE youngsters

A series of summer camps to teach children about the country's heritage have been launched by Watani. The events for youngsters aged from seven to 16 will continue until the end of the month. The first two were held in Dubai and Fujairah. "The camps aim to provide a useful and enjoyable outlet for the children while introducing them to the rich social and historic heritage of the country,” said Ahmed Obaid Al Mansoori, co-ordinator general of the Watani Programme.

A pearl once owned by Genghis Khan's grandson Kublai Khan was put on auction in abu dhabi. The pearl named Arco Valley is the " biggest of its size outside a museum" according to its present owner Khaled Ali Al Sayegh.
Reuter reported on Thursday that the Abu Dhabi jeweller expected the pearl to fetch a solid US$8 million. The pearl which used to belong to Kublai Khan was given by him to Marco Polo as a present. Al Sayegh bought the 7.9 cm long pearl from a French person 12 days ago.

 In search of Dubai’s treasure in the deep

The Arabian Gulf is the largest natural pearl diving area in the world, according to Captain Mohammad Khalifa Bin Thalith from Dubai Ports at Jebel Ali Ports, who spent 4 years putting together a map of pearl dive sites.
The original map, which dates back 69 years and represents some of the most popular dive sites, was used to recreate a more legible record of places sought out by pearl divers.

While Dubai's trade in pearls harvested from the waters of the Arabian Gulf may be a thing of the past, efforts are now underway to revive the emirates' role in the pearl industry.

 Tourism boost for Heritage Days

The annual Heritage Days in Sharjah will be incorporated next year as part of a package tour for tourists staying in hotels in the Northern Emirates and Dubai, said a senior official yesterday.
