Natural UAE

Insects with Complete Metamorphosis (Endopterygota)

Of the seven orders in this subclass found in the UAE, five are major orders and contain large numbers of often big and conspicuous insects. Of the remaining orders, the Trichoptera or caddisflies are uncommon insects in the Arabian Peninsular. In the UAE, the few species known are restricted to mountain wadis with permanent flowing water, in which their case-carrying larvae live. They include Setodes sugdeni Malicky first described from Wadi Madha in Fujairah and Cheumatopsyche capitella Martynov. The Siphonaptera include the fleas, with over 120 species recorded from Arabia. Some are hosted by man and domestic animals, but most are associated with native birds and mammals, especially rodents. Providing that the hosts occur in the UAE, most of the fleas known from Arabia will probably be found there, but no systematic studies are available.
