Sharjah Aquarium is celebrating a new – if unexpected – arrival.
Amber, a blacktip reef shark, was born in the main exhibit ocean tank on August 7, to the delight of staff.
It is the first time the species has been born at the aquarium, which acquired its first three blacktip reef sharks, Gold, Silver and Diamond, in April.

Hard Rock Cafe to dish up a second serving in Dubai Posted on 17/08/2010
When one of Dubai's oldest tourist landmarks Hard Rock Café closed in March 2009, mourning fans mobilised across the city to save their beloved rock-‘n'-roll eatery.
More than 10,000 fans joined a Facebook website to save Hard Rock while others begged authorities not to let the iconic mini Empire State Building structure go under the wrecking ball.
Hard Rock Café officials pledged to re-open and today they are following through on that promise — with a twist.

UAE is bracing to introduce metre instead of feet and yard in length measurements Posted on 15/08/2010
The Emirates Authority for Standardisation '&' Metrology (ESMA) is bracing to implement a new system for length and distance measurement units in all official transactions in the UAE. Mohammed Saleh Badri, Acting Director General of ESMA, announced the shift of length measurement units from feet and yard to the metre.
'A national action committee, made up of representatives of all relevant entities, will be set up to develop a plan for streamlining the shift to the metre," he added at the end

Emiratis enter Guinness World Records with their submission of the "largest artificial date" in the world Posted on 10/08/2010
Emirati poet, Hamad Sarhan Al Darie and his partner friend, Salem Rebhi Al Silawi have submitted an entry to the Guinness World Records for "the largest artificial date in the world". Al Darie and Al Silawi - who are based in Abu Dhabi and hope to see the emirate recognised in the Guinness World Records with this achievement - have completed the design and installation of what they hope is the largest artificial date in the world.

Foreign Ministry statement on Japanese oil tanker 'M Star' Posted on 01/08/2010
An official at the UAE Foreign Ministry stated that the Japanese oil tanker 'M Star', which was heading to Japan, had met with an accident on Wednesday while transitting the Strait of Hormuz, as a result of which it had to sail back to the Port of Fujairah.
Director of Media Affairs and Government Communications at the Foreign Ministry Sultan Al-Ali said in a statement that the investigations by the relevant authorities to determine the causes of the accident are still underway.

Families now have the chance to watch some of the world's most famous animated films at Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort (AWPR).
