Surprise inspections of fishing boats at sea would help protect the declining fish population in local waters, an official from the Environment Agency − Abu Dhabi (EAD) said yesterday.
The agency is concerned because previous measures have not done enough to maintain the stock of the most important commercial fish species.

Department adds 5,000 fish to reserve's waters Posted on 16/07/2009
In its continuous efforts to develop the natural reserve project in Jebel Ali, the Department of Planning and Development Trakhees in the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation on Wednesday morning released 5,000 fingerlings of subaiti (silver-black porgy) in its natural marine reserve area.

A new species of Arabian freshwater fish has been discovered by a UAE-based researcher and conservation officer at Emirates Wildlife Society - World Wildlife Fund (EWS-WWF). The small wadi fish was found in the Dhofra region of Oman near a village called Hasik near Salalah. Curbs on hammour sales to save stocks Posted on 14/05/2009
Environment officials will soon begin restricting the sale of hammour in the country in an effort to stave off the extinction of the popular local fish, whose population has been dwindling rapidly.
Abdulla Abdulrazzaq, consultant to the assistant deputy minister for fisheries at the Ministry of Environment and Water, said the ministry intended to prohibit the sale of hammour under 45cm in length, the typical size at which they reach sexual maturity.

The Abu Dhabi Government is considering new fishing regulations to protect hammour in the emirate's waters.
Hammour stocks worth Dh24.2 million (US$88.8m) were fished in Abu Dhabi in 2007, government statistics show. However, the catch is declining and there are no limits on catching juvenile fish.

The UAQ Marine Research Centre affiliated to the Ministry of Environment and Water has successfully hatched larvae of Hamour fish. The production of Hamour offspring came at the end of a series of experiments conducted at its laboratories and the Hamour hatcheries in the emirate. New rule for fishing boats comes into effect today Posted on 31/07/2007
Beginning today, commercial fishing boats will be barred from operating in Abu Dhabi waters if the boat owners are not present in the vessels. The Environment Agency–Abu Dhabi (EAD) had issued a decree in this regard in April this year and the law comes into effect from today. EAD officials said that by taking this measure, the government hoped to encourage Emirati fishermen to become active partners in the conservation, protection and sustainable exploitation of the fishery resources.

Diminished water tables, the introduction of non-native fish and pollution is affecting the survival of an indigenous fish species.
Colloquially known as wadi fish after their habitat, the first study of this species is currently under way and results so far have spread light on the threats mountain ecosystems and endemic species are facing here.

New decree on commercial fishing boats in Abu Dhabi issued Posted on 29/04/2007
In a bid to preserve the UAE's marine heritage, a decree was issued on 18 April, 2007 forbidding commercial fishing boats from operating in Abu Dhabi waters, without the boat owner on board.

Large quantities of fish confiscated from Abu Dhabi Markets Posted on 23/04/2007
During a regular inspection visit, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) confiscated illegal quantities of Badh, known as Longtail silverbiddy (Gerres longirostris).
EAD confiscated 90 Kg of fish from the Al Ain Fish Market and 145 kg of Badh from the Al Mirfa Fish Market. The measure is in line with Ministerial Decree No. 186/2006 pertaining to the Prohibition and Marketing of Badh fish during the period from April 1st - May 31st, 2007, which coincides with the fish's spawning season.

Fishing by Al Halaq in Abu Dhabi is now banned Posted on 18/04/2007
The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has issued a decision completely banning fishing via Al Halaq, which is a method of fishing using an encircling net, in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The decision is effective immediately.

Stocks of hammour are declining due to overfishing off the coast of Ajman, the Ministry of Environment and Water has warned.
The ministry's Water Creatures Research Centre conducted a study of around 15,000 fish in the waters of the UAE. The study was launched following concerns the fish were being caught illegally. Landing hammour is banned unless the fish are greater than 45 centimetres in length.

Depleted fish stocks will not affect UAE Posted on 15/11/2006
Everything is being done to reduce depleting fish stocks in the UAE with more than half a million fish released into the Gulf annually, according to the Ministry of Environment and Water.
