 Fujairah International Monodrama Festival to begin on January 14

Over 250 playwrights, directors, actors and other theatre personalities from 42 countries will attend the nine-day Fujairah International Monodrama Festival, which will commence on January 14 at the Tennis Club here.
The festival is being organised under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah, who will attend the event, in which 15 theatre works from Arab and other countries will be demonstrated.

 Opera Verdi Europe shows desire to turn Zayed's success story into opera

Opera Verdi Europe is showing great interest in composing the staggering achievements of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his biography into an opera similar to those world known masterpieces.
The idea was presented by Ivan Kyurkchiev, Director of Opera Verdi Europa, to H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister during a meeting yesterday.

 Audience plays along with Disney music

The Emirates Palace auditorium drew an unusually fresh-faced crowd last night for the latest instalment of the Abu Dhabi Classics concert series, The Magical Music of Walt Disney.
A large and vocal audience dominated by small children responded with enthusiasm to themes from such Disney films such as The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, as performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Freej Folklore, billed as "the largest Arab theatrical production of all time”, is a pyrotechnic explosion of dance, light and sound. Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, attended the premiere of the acclaimed play The Return of the Phoenix presented by the Rahbani family on Wednesday as part of "Eid in Dubai" celebrations.

Dubai's fabulous foursome, Um Khammas, Um Allawi, Um Saloom and Um Saeed – or collectively known as the lovable but cranky, animated old girls of Freej – are set to storm the stage after creating quite a stir on television.

The curtain rose yesterday on the Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre, an event that seeks to celebrate young theatre talent in the UAE. Over the next ten days, the Festival promises a rare treat for theatre lovers. Being held from August 10-20, the Festival will present a new play in Arabic each night at 9pm. Entry to all the plays is free of charge. The event is being organised at the premises of the Cultural and Scientific Association in Dubai's Al Mamzar area.

An all-emirate production starring the first UAE comic book hero will be staged in Dubai this Thursday. The unique 4D theatrical show, Ajaaj 2020, portrays the literary epic of a mysterious sandstorm, Ajaaj, that makes an appearance when the people of the land face danger.

HH Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council member and ruler of Sharjah, reiterated that the Arab Theatres Authority (ATA), is not a mere traditional institution, but a new institution tasked to revive community role of the theatre to confront challenges faced by Arabs, notably recover of occupied Palestine.

 Emirati theatre 'must depict modern lives'

About 50 years have passed since the first play was staged in the UAE. A researcher in the history of Emirati theatre, Abdul Elah Abdul Qader, puts 1958 as the actual start of formal theatre acts. Two plays were staged that year by youths at Al Shaab Club in Sharjah and the other one in Dubai. But it was hard times for the theatre movement till 1963, the year Watheq Al Samaraei, an Iraqi artist, came to the UAE to supervise some plays and hold workshops.
