Fujairah International Monodrama Festival to begin on January 14

Over 250 playwrights, directors, actors and other theatre personalities from 42 countries will attend the nine-day Fujairah International Monodrama Festival, which will commence on January 14 at the Tennis Club here. Opera Verdi Europe is showing great interest in composing the staggering achievements of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his biography into an opera similar to those world known masterpieces. The Emirates Palace auditorium drew an unusually fresh-faced crowd last night for the latest instalment of the Abu Dhabi Classics concert series, The Magical Music of Walt Disney. Freej Folklore, billed as "the largest Arab theatrical production of all time”, is a pyrotechnic explosion of dance, light and sound. The curtain rose yesterday on the Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre, an event that seeks to celebrate young theatre talent in the UAE. About 50 years have passed since the first play was staged in the UAE. A researcher in the history of Emirati theatre, Abdul Elah Abdul Qader, puts 1958 as the actual start of formal theatre acts. Two plays were staged that year by youths at Al Shaab Club in Sharjah and the other one in Dubai.
