The amnesty given by the Cabinet to illegal workers has achieved its goals, with 176,000 workers adjusting their status, said Dr Ali Bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi, Minister of Labour. There was a big rush of amnesty-seekers at the Indian Embassy yesterday, with officials sending SMS saying exit passes were ready. About 2,000 amnesty seekers made their way to the embassy. Most had already applied for amnesty and were waiting to collect their exit passes.

Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior said that an additional grace period of two months has been given for those who stay illegally in the country, to leave the country. About 60,000 visas have been cancelled since the amnesty was announced on June 3, said a senior official of the Labour Ministry. Illegal residents rushed to the amnesty centre at the Indian High School to collect their outpasses, the distribution of which began yesterday.
