The UAE Ministry of Economy's Consumer Protection Department fined more than 10 outlets in Sharjah's fruits and vegetables, meat and fish markets yesterday, during a field visit to verify compliance with preset prices and sales terms.

Despite a slight drop of two points to 101 in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter, the UAE is still among the "top 10 most optimistic nations", according to the latest edition of the Nielsen Global Consumer Confidence Index.

Food-price inspectors begin checks today on supermarkets and the Mina vegetable market to prevent price rises in the weeks before Ramadan. SCAD: Inflation in Abu Dhabi up 2.5% during the first half of 2010 Posted on 18/07/2010
According to the SCAD's report, the average rise in consumer prices for the first half of 2010 was 2.50%, compared to the same period of 2009 as evident from the advance in the CPI for the period January-June 2010 to 117.92 points, up from 115.04 points over the same period of 2009, according to the Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi (SCAD).

Consumers to be protected Posted on 15/07/2010
From Sunday, all outlets, including shops and restaurants, must clearly display contact details for customers to report complaints about their consumer rights, as directed by the Department of Economic Development.
The outlets will have a three-month grace period — until October 18 — to implement the new policy and those which fail to do so will be fined, the department said.
The department said the purpose of the rule was to strengthen communication between consumers and retailers.

According to the May issue of the Monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) Report issued by Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi (SCAD), the year-over-year inflation rate for May 2010 was 3.02%, as the index accelerated from 114.75 points in May 2009 to 118.22 points in April 2010.

In a second consecutive month of increases, consumer prices in the UAE climbed 0.78 per cent year-on-year in April, led by rising food costs.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the heavyweight food and non-alcoholic beverages component rose 4.52 per cent in April compared to a year earlier.

Consumer prices in Abu Dhabi rose 2.16 per cent during the first four months of this year, a new report by Statistics Centre Abu Dhabi (SCAD) shows.
The consumer price index (CPI) stood at 117.70 points from January to April, up from 115.22 points for the same period last year, SCAD said in its April report released yesterday. The study analyses results from the CPI calculation, with 2007 fixed as the base year.

Consumer prices in Dubai softened for a fifth consecutive month in March on the back of slowing in food, housing and communications cost increases, official data showed on Tuesday.

The UAE recorded the strongest rally in Gulf consumer confidence index in the first 2010 quarter, according to findings of a survey published on Sunday.
Reversing a drop in consumer confidence felt at the end of last year, the UAE moved up 4.4 points on the index, followed by Bahrain, which saw a 1.9 point rise and Kuwait, with a 0.9 point boost according to a survey by Bayt.com and YouGov Siraj.
