Automakers meet UAE officials over 24-hour rule

The Ministry of Economy has met with representatives of several auto dealers, including Al Futtaim Motors, Gargash Enterprises and Al Masaood Automobiles to ensure compliance with the "24-hour rule", which mandates the recall of all defective products within 24 hours of discovery. Toyota on Monday announced the recall of two models — Avalon and Sequoia (2005 - 2010) — in the UAE, out of the eight models recalled globally. Toyota recently had to recall 8 million cars globally due to a faulty accelerator which causes sudden and unexpected acceleration. The models affected are RAV4, Corolla, Matrix, Avalon, Camry, Highlander, Tundra, and Sequoia. 'No Chrysler vehicles in UAE affected by recall'

Following the recent news of faulty Chrysler vehicles being recalled due to a potential defect in the brake system, Chrysler Group Middle East has said no such vehicles are in the UAE. Abu Dhabi residents are shunning new car purchases during the global downturn but are buying more consumer goods such as clothing, appliances and food, statistics from Mina Zayed Port show. In a small but significant move towards becoming a global hub of green energy, Abu Dhabi on Monday bought a stake in a Silicon Valley start-up that makes high-performance electric sports cars. The UAE's automobile finance market is worth an estimated US$2.3 billion (Dh8.45bn), according to industry figures.
