Traditional saluki race adds to excitement at falconry festival

Barking and snarling saluki dogs ran after "gazelles" at the camel race track in Remah, re-enacting the traditional Arabian hunt, as part of the Second International Falconry Festival that opened here yesterday. Rescue efforts release 700 bustards into wild

More than 700 Houbara bustards bred in captivity have been released in UAE wilderness areas this year as part of efforts to preserve the endangered species. The effort has grown each year since 2004, when five of the birds were released. "This year we are releasing the highest number so far in the UAE," said Mohammed Al Baidani, the director general of the International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC), which is overseeing the work. Emirates Centre for Wildlife Propagation (ECWP) has released 100 captive-bred houbara bustards into the wild of Bukhara in Uzbekistan as part of a programme to release 350 birds. HH Lt. The founders of the UAE and Mongolia had something in common. Both Sheikh Zayed and Genghis Khan adored the Saker Falcon. Record year for falcon hospital in Abu Dhabi

The year 2010 was a record year for the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH) with accomplishments in all departments. The ADFH, the first public hospital for falcons in the UAE, recorded an 18 per cent in the number of patient visits with over 5,835 falcons being attended to in 2010. This was the highest number of visits since the hospital opened its doors in 1999, a statement said. A new project to study and sequence the genomes (hereditary information) of Peregrine and Saker Falcons has begun in Abu Dhabi. Blood samples have been collected from specially selected male specimens of Peregrine and Saker at the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH).
