President receives Islamic scholars
President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan received yesterday evening the Islamic scholars and preachers who are in the country at his invitation during the holy month of Ramadan. Present during the meeting were Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister.

National Election Committee to upgrade e-voting system
The National Election Committee has reviewed means to upgrade the e-voting system for the coming Federal National Council's election to ensure it is user friendly and to maintain security of the system and privacy of the electorate.

UAE students Stand Up to help eradicate global poverty
Thousands of students across the UAE took part in events yesterday to "Stand Up" and be heard on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. With early estimates of 1.6 million participants worldwide, the campaign clearly surpassed the figure needed to set a Guinness World Record for the highest number of people to "Stand Up" against poverty.

Journalists must hunt for truth, Mohammad tells media men

Bird flu guide for travellers launched
The Secretariat of the National Committee for Emergency Response to Bird Flu has launched a mini guide for travellers. The guide contains advice in Arabic, English, German, French and Hindi and is part of the awareness campaign entitled 'Better Safe than Sorry' which was launched in 2005.

Figures for Dubai population released
The census population, houses and establishments in Dubai showed that the number of UAE nationals aged 10 years and above was 106,867, a total of 77.7 per cent of the emirate's total national residents. Among the national residents of Dubai, 49.8 per cent are male, while 50.2 per cent are female. Arif Obaid Al Muhairi, Director of the Census Centre at the Dubai Municipality sad that the majority of national residents hold a secondary school degree, making up 31.5 per cent of national residents.

DIFX becomes global leader in sukuk with Dh550.5m listing
The Dubai International Financial Exchange (DIFX) yesterday listed a US$150 million (Dh550.5m) sukuk, making the exchange the global leader in sukuk by listed value. The sukuk was created by the Kuwait-based The Investment Dar Company (TID) and raises the total value of Sharia-compliant bonds on the DIFX to US$4.11 billion (Dh15.1bn).

ADCB realizes record profit of Dh1,616 Million
The Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) announced a record net profit for the 9 months period of 2006 of Dh1,616 million against Dh1,425 million for the same period last year, an increase of 13 per cent. First Gulf Bank's net profit hits Dh1.14b
Abu Dhabi based First Gulf Bank yesterday announced results for the first nine months of 2006, reporting a 60 per cent increase in net profits to Dh1.14 billion compared to the same period last year, a figure that exceeds the total annual profits for 2005.The bank's business is maintaining steady growth with total assets increasing by 37 per cent to Dh36.1 billion in September 2006 from Dh26.3 billion in December 2005. Commercial Bank of Dubai net up 39.1%
Commercial Bank of Dubai, the UAE's 10th biggest bank by assets, said yesterday its third quarter net profit jumped 39.1 per cent from the same period a year ago. The bank said in a statement that net profit in July-September rose to Dh157.65 million from Dh113.34 million last year. Total income climbed 34.3 per cent to Dh232.15 million.

RAK Properties registers Dh376m profit
RAK Properties yesterday announced a net profit of Dh376.6 million for the nine-month period ending September 30. This accounted for 18.8 per cent of the company's Dh2 billion capital, while its assets amount to Dh2.53bn. RAK Properties was formed in March 2005 and issued an IPO the same month, offering 55 per cent of the company, with the remaining 45 per cent retained by the Ras Al Khaimah Government.
The company launched its first project, the Dh500m Julfar Towers, in February 2006.
