Some of the fastest Arabian saluki dogs gathered at Al Dhafra Festival yesterday for one of the last races at this year's 10 days Al Dhafra Festival, in the desert surroundings of Madinat Zayed, the Western Region of Abu Dhabi Emirate. For Saluki expert Cathy Smith her day's work on Friday involved carefully scrutinising a succession of the hunting dogs as they paraded past her. UAE charity raises funds to fly stray Salukis to Canada

The Ras Al Khaimah Animal Welfare Centre will host a fund-raiser at Al Hamra Mall tomorrow to fly three dogs to Canada. The centre in December sent three others to the Arabian Saluki Centre of Canada, where homes were quickly found for the strays. The UAE has been invited to participate in an international conference on the preservation of Saluki dogs. The Finnish Saluki Club will hold the Saluki World Congress 2008 in Helsinki and the Abu Dhabi-based Arabian Saluki Centre (ASC) will deliver one of the presentations.
